Anxious Lately?

Did you know that "fear not" is the MOST repeated command in the Bible? Fear and anxiety are human conditions. There is not something wrong with you when you experience fear and/or anxiety. God knows our hearts and knows that we are an anxious bunch!

Everyone experiences anxiety at times. Anxiety is a normal part of our human experience. However, if anxiety is getting in the way of day-to-day tasks, feels overwhelming, keeps you from enjoying things, or prevents you from doing what you need or want to do, you may be experiencing more complex levels of anxiety.

We are experiencing life in a much different way than ever before. The pandemic has not only brought many changes in our lives, but it has also brought anxieties, fears, grief, depression, and loads of other feelings and experiences. We are seeing anxiety levels rise in all age groups. People feel isolated, scared, lonely, and yes, anxious!

Children experiencing anxiety may look a little different from teens or adults. Children may begin to express not wanting to attend school, they may be more clingy than usual, or they may begin asking A LOT of questions. Sometimes, anxiety can manifest in physical symptoms like stomach aches, headache, pounding heart, feeling dizzy, and feeling like you can't catch your breath. Some children may start to have trouble at bedtime either staying in bed, falling asleep, or staying asleep. Be aware that perfectionism can sometimes be masking anxious thoughts. Please don't dismiss your child's worries, even if you think they don't make sense, or you think they are silly. Your child's worries are very real to them. Your therapist can help you navigate this area and provide strategies that can help you, the parent, support your child.

Counseling and play therapy can help address anxiety and worry, and help you or your child, learn to manage the symptoms of anxiety. CBT, or Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, is especially useful in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Your therapist can help you learn strategies to address and manage your anxious thoughts. Younger children can benefit from play therapy to help them cope with anxiety.
