Play Therapy

Play therapy is a modality of child therapy. Play is a child's first language. Children do not have the vocabulary to express many of their thoughts and feelings. When children are exposed to a playful environment, they can become more open to learn and practice new skill sets. They become better able to explore their thoughts and feelings and will feel safe to express themselves as they need to.

Play therapy can help children master new coping skills, increase emotional regulation, and reduce anxiety. Research suggests play therapy is an effective mental health approach, regardless of age, gender, or the nature of the problem, and works best when a parent, family member, or caretaker is actively involved in the treatment process. Play therapy can help children who are struggling with behavioral issues, have experienced trauma, or have a diagnosis, like anxiety, depression, ADHD, or learning disabilities.

Shannon is a Registered Play Therapist, which means she has completed extensive specialized play therapy education, training, and supervised experience. She utilizes play therapy approaches when working with children ages 3-12.
